UAE: The Number of the Detainees Rises to 72 through Arresting Activists, bloggers and Media-figures
ANHRI condemns the persistence campaign to arrest the activists and bloggers in addition to imprison them without clear accusations and without pressing clear charges on them in addition to not sending them to the prosecution as well as not discolsing their place of arrest.
UAE authorities have arrested, on December 16 and 17, 2012, four activists and bloggers; “Omran El-Baloshy” 21 years old, “Saleh El-Nikabi” 21 years old, “Salem El-Shiekhy El-Baloshy” and “Ahmed Hassan El-Hamady” 26 years old on the background of participating in the call for the political reform and protecting the fundamental human rights inside the country in addition to their activities on the Internet and their solidarity with the campaign that calls to reveal the fate of the three detainees that the security of the state denied their arrest.
In addition, the Saudi authorities hand overed “Abdullah El-Sageh”, 27 years old to UAE security department, after he was arrested during performing Umrah because of his political activities.
In a related context, UAE arrested three bloggers and activists on December 19, 2012. They were the former diplomat “Nagy Rahsed El-Nemy” who was arrested in Iraq during representing the state and then released on May 18, 2006 after weeks, “Maged El-Shaaer El-Shamis” the educationalist and “Saaid El-Shahy” the media-figure and the owner of the sources of the news. The reasons behind their arrest are not known yet in addition to their places of arrest.
ANHRI “the recent arrests launched by the UAE authorities on the activists and bloggers which started on December 5 by the arrest of the youth Mohamed Salem El-Zomor, after the authorities found a justification to arrest the activists through the anti-freedom of the internet law “combating IT crimes law” which issued in November 2012 which bans the call for demonstrations via social networks”.
ANHRI calls for the immediate release of all the opinion and conscience detainees in the UAE prisons in addition to drop all the charges pressed on them. It has also called to review the law on combating IT crimes and purify them from the restrictive provisions that anti-freedom and the immediately stop all harassing the bloggers and activists through these provisions.
