Yemen: ANHRI condemns the detention of Secretary General of “Al- Haq” opposition party

CAIRO, July 6, 2011

ANHRI condemned today the detention of Hassan Mohamed Zaid (Secretary General of “Al- Haq” opposition party) by the Yemeni National Security Forces “Intelligence” in Sana’a International Airport before flaying to Saudi Arabia. Zaid has been taken to an unknown destination, that was according to a security crackdown launched by authorities belong to Ali Abdullah Saleh to arrest opposition figures in order to thwart protests on the verge of toppling Saleh’s regime.

It is reported that the National Security Forces “Intelligence” is overseen by nephew of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Yemeni opposition warned last week of arrests for political and opposition figures because of their prominent role in the people’s revolution demanding the departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh who is on the chair of power since 1978.

It is reported that the human rights situation in Yemen in steady decline -since the outbreak of demonstrations demanding the departure of Ali Abdullah Saleh and his regime- that the regime is practicing repression and violence against peaceful demonstrators, as well against journalists and those whose have points of view.

ANHRI said “Silence of Arab and international community is no longer acceptable, for all of these abuses by the authorities belong to Ali Abdullah Saleh. The government of Saleh has to leave now and stop shedding the blood of Yemeni citizens. All of this repression did not affect the protests which confirms that the revolts in Yemen are insist on the departure of Saleh’s family, and Yemeni authorities must respond to the will of Yemeni people in order to protect the future of Yemen “
