Asmaa Mahfouz acquitted in slander and libel case
Cairo, 6 May 2012
Ain Shams Misdemeanor Court acquitted the activist Asmaa Mahfouz on May 5th in the libel and slander case filed by Tarek Zidan because of some of her tweets on Twitter.
Tarek Zidan, head of Thawret Masr Party (Egypt’s Revolution
Party), had filed the criminal lawsuit No. 13846
of 2011, against Mahfouz on charges of libel, slander, and defamation. According to the text of the lawsuit, he accused her of disseminating false news on Twitter
that aim to drive a wedge between him and the Egyptian revolution. This was the
first libel and slander case based on allegedly offensive tweets.
The team of the Legal Aid Unit for Freedom of Expression in ANHRI defended Mahfouz in that case.
