Murtinia: ANHRI Calls for the Immediate Release of the Journalists “Abeed Weld Emegen”
ANHRI held the responsibility on the Murtaini authorities for the health condition of the rights activist and the Journalists “Abeed Weld Emegen” who is detained in the central prison “Nouakchott” due to the a TV intervention with “Alarabya Channel” in which he spoked about the arrests due to burning some jurisprudence books since several months.
Muratani authorities arrested “Abeed Weld Emegen”, the deputy right journalist club, as well as anti-slavery activist and the “Initi.net” adminstrator, on Sunday April 29th of 2012 due to participation via telephone in the “Akhar Saa’ah” news program on “Alarabyia channel”, in which he spoke about the detainees due to burning jurisprudence books of “Malek” by IRA organization, anti-slavery, due to allegations that these books enhance slavery in the country.
Many demonstrations erupted addressed by the authorities with violence over the incident and the authorities charged “Emegen” with participating in the burning of the books despite his denial of the charge and lack of knowledge of the subject of burning books only after it occurs and lack of conviction in this work.
He is now in Nouakchott Central Prison in poor health condition, despite the legal provision that prohibits the imprisonment of journalists in the country.
Some rights and politicals activists organized some of the protest in solidarity with “Emegen” and demanding his release, and said the journalist “Aziz Weld Sufi” The investigations with “Emegen” has focused on his journalistic writings.
ANHRI said that “the continue of imprison of the human rights activist and the journalist “Emegen” is a serious violation to the freedom of opinion and speech in the country, as well as he proved to all that the law which prohibits the imprisonment of journalists is still ink on paper.”
The Arabic Network held all the responsibility on the Mauritanian authorities for the lives of the vulnerable activists related to his health as it deteriorated in prison and not to provide him with adequate medical care.
ANHRI also called for the immediate release “Emegen” and drop all charges against him in an attempt to get rid of the opposing voices.
