Cairo September 17, 2012
ANHRI welcomes the release of the political dissident “Meshal Za’ar El-Matiri” by the Qatari authorities, on Thursday September 11, 2012 after being detained for 10 days in one of Doha’s prisons.T
On the first of September th he Qatari authorities arrested him using force in order to hand him over to the Saudi authorities, despite they know that his life could be endangered if they handed him over to Saudi-Arabia as he is a political dissident.
“El-Matiri” since he has been to Qatar, he faced several harassments conducted by the Qatari authorities. Moreover, he faced a failed kidnapping process by unknown people to hand him over to the Saudi embassy in Qatar. It took place on the mid of August, only after a few days he rejected a Qatari officials proposal to negotiate with the Saudi authorities.
ANHRI said that “the release of the political dissident after being arrested for a while is a positive step conducted by the Qatari authorities. The authorities have answered the human rights organizations and the activists calls, as they called for the release of “El-Matiri”. Moreover, the Qatari authorities improved its image after arresting “El-Matiri”, without charges and for the purpose of handing him over to Saudi-Arabia, which represents serious violations to the binding international treaties and covenants to Qatar. Furthermore, it violates the principles of human rights which ban handing over any citizen to a country that constitutes a threat to his life and where he could be tortured or forbid from fair trial if he was accused of a serious crime, that will certainly happen in Saudi-Arabia.
