ANHRI condemns shutting down the TV satellite channel

ANHRI condemns the shutting down of the TV channel “El-Nahg”, of the majority of the dissolved Kuwaiti parliament, after 24 hours of its launch.
On Monday September 24 the ministry of information has stopped the broadcast of “El-Nahg” TV station of the majority of the dissolved parliament, the channel broad-casted on the 23th of last September on Arab-sat after few hours of its launch. Some of the members of the parliament mentioned that it was shut down to answer the governmental pressures to stop it from broad casting the events of “El-Eradah square”, which was organized on the last Monday September 24. The authorities warned from organizing any demonstrations or set-in in the square. Furthermore, they considered that violation the public order and security and it will be punished by jail and fines. The minister of information said that the Channel “Nahg” is not licensed and those whom made it did not apply for permits.
This is wasn’t the first that a channel is shut down by the authorities. On 2009 the authorities shut down “El-Sour”, owned by the business man and the political activist “Mohamed El-Jawihl”, due to broadcasting a program named “El-Sarya” in which he addressed the topic of dual nationalities in Kuwait, then it was re-broad casted through the European satellite for a short period before “El-Jawihl” announces the shutting down of the channel for ever in May 2011.
ANHRI called the Kuwaiti authorities to respect media and journalism freedoms in the country. In addition to stop harassing the freedom of expression through restrictions and conditions.
