Tunisia

Dr. Moncif El-Marzouki decided to return back to Tunisia
Dr. Moncif El-Marzouki declared that he decided to travel to his homeland Tunisia on 21 October to participate in the struggle with other Tunisians against corruption. He also renewed his call for the Tunisian people to resist the violation of their rights and freedoms using all possible civil and peaceful means.

Trials, Sentences, and violating liberties
On 19 October 2006, a Tunisian court sentenced each of Hussein ben Omar and Hefnawy ben Othman for 15 days in prison starting from the date of their detention on 12 October. They were detained because they bind themselves with iron chains to an electric column before the public opinion in protest on the suspicious practices of the Ministry of Education.
On 19 October 2006, the First Instance Court of Al-Quirawan sentenced the ex-political prisoner Al-Sayed Al-Taher Al-Harathy for two months because of incompliance with the administrative watch procedures.
The family of Gamila Ayad is suffering harassments by the political police. Gamila Ayad is the mother of Maher Bazioush who is charged with committing terrorist practices according to tunuisian terrorist law.
On 18 October 2006, the ex-political prisoner and renowned member of Al-Nahdda movement; Ali Al-Areed was prevented from participation in the first anniversary celebration of founding 18 October Movement for Rights and Freedoms. He was threatened with being re-arrested if he continued contacting political persons and parties.

    Syria

    New charges against Michel Kilo and other three
    In consequence of the approval of the Damascus court judge on 19 October 2006 to release the writer and intellectual Michel Kilo who was detained on account of Damascus-Beirut Declaration, the investigator charged Kilo with new charges. They include weakening the national commitment, degrading the respect of the state, encouraging hostile attacks, defamation, sparking sectarian hatred, etc. Consequently, the judge decided to keep him under detention. In addition, Mahmoud Essa, Khalil Hussein, and Soliman Shamar were charged with the same accusations and were re-arrested.

    Releasing the Kurds who was detained during Al-Kamshaly incidents
    The Kurds who was detained during Al-Kamshaly incidents were released excluding the child Tareq Abdul Qader Al-Aomary. The court is attempting to lengthen the period of trial by calling irrelevant persons upon no clear evidences except the reports of the security policemen. This is deemed a sever violation.

    The head of The Iraqi House of Representatives calls for questioning Al-Sharqia TV and Al-Zaman newspaper
    In its statement no. 96, the head of The Iraqi House of Representatives calls for questioning Al-Sharqia TV and Al-Zaman newspaper. The Statement also accused some media channels of being the reason behind the current tensions which threatens the national security.

    According to the right to reply: Iraqi House of Representatives denied the above case
    Iraqi House of Reprehensive declared that its statement does not include any mere reference to the call for closing Al-Sharqia TV or Al-Zaman newspaper. The statement only called upon the Cabinet Minister to hold them accountable for their unlawful practices.

    Kidnapping a Journalist
    Iraqi Journalist Abdul Majuid Ismael was kidnapped by an unidentified armed group in a car while driving his own car in Gamila.

    Security Authorities in Nadhor city prevented Moroccan Al-Nahar newspaper form being distributed last week. The targeted issue of distribution is that of 11 October 2006. It includes an article on the activities of the drug dealing networks in the city.

    Arrest and forced disappearances after the presidential elections
