Third year 27 october 2006 - 2 november 2006 Jordan ======== The formation of committee for the activities of the conference held in parallel with Future Forum The Jordanian civil society announced the formation of a preparatory committee to be the third of its kind in Jordan. That is in order to provide its approach to the Future Forum to be held in Amman in December. The creators of this initiative announced their respect to all the views and that they are not a substitute for the committees which was formed earlier. They also stressed the importance and the need to deliver the voice of everybody to the meeting of the Future Forum. Sources More information on Jordan page: http://www.hrinfo.net/jordan ========================== Bahrain ======== Bahrain: New Steps Towards Repression Upon the report of Dr. Salah Al-Bandar (Al-Bandar Gate), The Bahraini government blocked several websites, particularly those handling Bandar Gate topic. The ruling family is claimed to be involved in establishing and financing a wide network of governmental officials and traitorous civil society members in Bahrain. The purpose of this network is to marginalize the role of Shiite citizens who represent the majority of Bahraini people and to control the prosecution election which is supposed to be held before the end of this year. In addition, they worked on smearing the reputation of independent human rights activists who have no relationships with the state. This pushed the Egyptian human rights organizations to call upon both Bahraini King and government to eliminate all the current violations and to unblock the defunct websites. In addition, the Egyptian human rights organizations call for conducting fair, transparent, and public investigations into Al-Bandar Gate and to announce the names of those who are proven to be involved to the public. Sources More information on Bahrain page: http://www.hrinfo.net/bahrain ========================== Tunisia ======== After the severance of diplomatic relations with Qatar, a campaign is launched against Al-Jazeera TV Al-Jazeera TV broadcasted an interview with Dr Moncif Al-Marzouki, President of the Congress Party by Al-Jazeera TV, on 14 October. Al-Marzouki criticized government policy in the Tunisian suppression of civil liberties and called for launching a peaceful protest. Upon this, Dr. Marzouki was questioned with the charge of "urging the population to violate the laws of the country. Tunisian authorities decided to terminate its diplomatic representation in Qatar and the closure of the Tunisian embassy there, regarding the State of Qatar responsible for the broadcasts of mass media located on the territory Sources More information on Tunisia page: http://www.hrinfo.net/tunisia ========================== Syria ======== Save Al-Haska from sinking The opening of one of the Turkish dams on Khabour River, in addition to heavy rains on Haseka governor led to torrential floods. The flood destroyed hundreds of houses, and other hundreds are submerged with water. The whole villages are destroyed and almost 16 people are killed. In addition, the tremendous financial losses may cause a true humanitarian catastrophe due to the absence of the local authorities at the incident location. Sham TV prohibited from broadcasting for undeclared reasons The Syrian Minister of Information issued a vocal order to prohibit the broadcasting of Sham TV, private channel for undeclared reasons. The satellite channel is owned by producer and Syrian parliament member, Mohammad Akram Al-Gendi, and the director M'amoun Albani. The channel was banned from broadcasting on Saturday morning dated 28 October 2006 at 8:00 a.m. on both Arab sat and Nile sat moons. The channel was officially inaugurated in the early days of last Ramadan. Hunger strike in protest on the detention of dozens of freedom of conscience advocates Dr. Laboani and Anwar Al-Benny have launched hunger strike on 28 October 2006.Michel Kilo has launched hunger strike for three days to protest his continuing detention along with other conscience prisoners as Dr. Araf Dalila, Ryad Drar, Nazar Restenawi and Omar AL-Abid Allah and hundreds of political detainees. They attacked her car in "Heifa" street, near Al-Talaae Square. Then they shoot her and her driver dead. The reporter of Nahrain TV; Saadon Gaberi and Al-Mada newspaper journalist; Amer al-Ekashi have been abused and persecuted by police officers. Saadon was covering in Al-Senaa area in Najaf province when he was harassed by the police officer. Amer al- Ekashi was harassed and detained for few hours though he had showed them his press badge. It committed more crimes which left 12 martyrs including woman and child, and almost 26 are injured. It devastated two houses fully. Other three houses, two factories, workshop and cafeteria were harmed. 500 donema of agriculture land were spoiled in ten incursions by the forces in the period between October 19 and 29 October2006. Journalist abduction new phenomenon in Gaza After the Palestinians were the keenest on getting reporters in their territories to document and scandal the massacres of the Israeli occupying government, the Spanish journalist Roberto has been subject to abduction. Roberto, who works for Cooperation Institution for Peace, was abducted in Gaza on Monday noon by unidentified gunmen. Statements contradicting on prisoner Exchange The local newspapers are full of news regarding a deal to exchange prisoners. Such news talks about figures and standers are later sometimes confirmed and sometimes denied by more than one official. The law and the Constitution stipulate that administrative authorities may not intervene in the management of the labor elections and that the public assembly and syndicate committees are entrusted with the supervision and management of the electoral process. However, the statements of Minister of Manpower who represents the government put the dates of the elections and its employees who will be the members of supervisors of the sub-committees and groups to organize and vote count. Policemen in Port Said insult ordinary citizens Captain Mahmoud Al-Behiery of Public Facilities Police Department insulted one of the citizens, as a result of sympathy of Maher Mahmoud Hussein with the assaulted citizen. This outraged the officer who pointed his own weapon towards the citizens Ali Maher and beats him severely. This caused wounds on the face (which need three stitches) and a rift in the right foot. In the suburbs police station, Maher Mahmoud Hussein was driven to the Chamber of the Commissioner by the officer who rapped him several times with brutality and sadism. Security forces overlook the rapping of women downtown in feast Women were rapped and sexually harassed by irresponsible men, downtown Cairo during feast. The security service bureau is still denying the occurrence of this incident despite the statements of eye witnesses. The Military Court sentenced Talaat Al-Saddat for one year because of his statements The military court sentenced Talaat Al-Sadat on 31 October 2006 for one year because of insulting the armed forces in case number 49/2006. Al-Sadat made some talk shows wherein he called for re-investigating the incident of assassinating the ex-president Anwar Al-Sadat in 1981. The signatory Egyptian human rights organizations declare their disappointment because of the tangible retardation of the human rights statuesque in Bahrain. This conveys the lapse of the reformation promises given by the current Bahraini King Hamad ben Essa Al Khalifa once he came to power in 1999. The imprisoned citizen Mahmoud Salah El-Sayed said: "I am jailed in Damanhour prison. I got 14 judicial rulings to release me. However, non of them is implemented. Over three and a half years (40 months of repeated arrests) I did my best to be released; I sent a petition to the Prime Minister, and the Attorney General. I received no replies. I also complained to The Minister of Interior who turned me a deaf ear.
