Freedom of Expression
Arabic Archive Foundation issued a report on freedom of expression situation in Jordan in 2006. This year witnessed many violations and pressures including insulting journalists verbally and physically.

    Tunisia
    ========
    Violations
    International Association to Support Political Prisoners issued a press release on the harsh treatment suffered by the political prisoner Ayman Al-Doriedy with the purpose to withdraw his claim filed against the manager of Al-Romy prison.

    Tunisian League for Human Rights issued a press release on the former opinion prisoner Kabiel El-Nasery who served 40 months in prison. He is still suffering harassments and attacks by security men.

    Violations
    Human Rights Watch issued a press release to call upon Algerian authorities to drop the politically-motivated charges against two human rights lawyers. The lawyers' case is considered by the appeal court right now.

    Saudi Arabia

    Detention
    Human Rights Watch reported on its fact-finding mission to Saudi Arabia which continued for four weeks. Researchers focused on identifying the situation of human rights issues, including unfair trials, detaining children, and legal restrictions imposed on women.

    The Committee for Defense of Human Rights in The Arabian Peninsula (CDHRAP) issued two separate press releases to condemn persecuting the Shiite and arresting Mohsen Mohamed El-Turkey.

    Clashes
    Sudanese Organization for Human Rights is highly concerned by the violence witnessed by Al-Nileen University in Khartoum, which led to the murder of a student and another wounded.

    Freedom of Expression
    The same organization also announced that it is highly concerned by the detention of two Sudanese reporters from Al-Watan newspaper.

    Syria

    Released
    Syrian authorities released the Kurdish leader and general secretary of Partiya Yekitiya Demoqrat a Kurd li Sûriyê, Mohamed Shiekhomos (known as Mohey El-Dien Sheikh Alie) on 16 February 2007. He was kidnapped by Syria Military Intelligence Service from a café in Halab city on 20 December 2006.

    In the same context, Reporters without Borders (RSF) called for releasing Michel Kilo who was detained in Syria since 14 May 2006.

    Journalists
    Journalistic Freedoms Observatory issued two separate press releases. The first documented the finding of the dead body of Iraq Republic Radio reporter, who was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen one week ago. The other press release condemned the breaking of US forces into Iraqi Press Syndicate and damaging assets and office furniture.

    The Iraqi Association for Human Rights issued a press release to condemn the detention of journalist Monier Asaad reporter of Al-Hurra TV in Mousel.

    Palestine

    Harassments against media
    National Association for Democracy and Law issued a press release to condemn the kidnapping and steeling of a car belonging to Palestine TV. That is in addition to burning a cultural institution in north Gaza strip.

    Attacking Al-Aqsa Mosque
    Al-Qudus Center for Democracy and Human Rights is highly concerned by the ongoing digging in Al-Qudus City by Israeli forces. Israel is following a programmed plan to destroy Al-Aqsa mosque and replace it with a Jewish Temple, according to Al-Qudus Center.

    In the same context, The Union of Arab Community Based Organizations (Ittijah) formed a popular delegation to meet with the ambassador of the European Union to explain the risks resulted from digging around Al-Aqsa landscape.

    The Language of Repression
    Four activists called for a peaceful demonstration in Al-Shohada'a square in Tripoli on Saturday 17 February to celebrate the first anniversary of Ben Ghazi demonstration which led to the murder of dozens of demonstrators.

    Torture
    Seven human rights organizations called upon human rights activists and advocators to support Mohamed Farag, journalist of Al-Ahrar newspaper who was tortured by policemen. His claim will be considered by the court on 26 February 2007 at 9:00 a.m. in Al-Galaa Misdemeanor Court.

    Collective Punishment Policy from Kafer Turkey to Ariesh
    The Egyptian Organization for human rights condemned the brutality of security forces against the citizens of Kafer Turkey for objecting on building mobile network. A woman went to ask a policeman, why he arrested her son. The policeman replied by slapping her face and letting her fell unconscious. When one of her relatives approached to rescue her, the policeman shot his leg. This is one of the several scenes of violence practiced by policemen against civilians in Egypt.

    Human Rights Watch called upon the Egyptian government to release hundreds of Muslim brotherhood members who were arrested while practicing their right to freedom of expression. The organization mentioned the names of 226 members of the prohibited group by Egyptian authorities.

    Constitution amendments
    In the occasion of constitution amendments, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights is concerned by the fact that fighting terrorism may be applied in contradiction with the stipulations to protect rights and freedoms in the constitution.

    Attacks on Al-Aqsa
    Attacks on Al-Aqsa mosque was the main topic handled by human rights organizations this week.

    Five human rights organizations renewed demands to disclose the truth behind the assassination of progressive activist Ayat Al-Gayed Mohamed Yana'asy. This came as a part of celebrating the anniversary of his assassination.

    Clashes
    National Organization to Defend Human Rights and Freedoms (HOOD) considered the Yemeni government liable for the harassments suffered by Al-Gaashien since Sunday morning. In the same context, Amnesty International called upon the Yemeni president to take necessary measures, according to international law, to protect human rights in Saada in west Yemen.

    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information

    What do we need to stop the miserable situation in Darfur? This was the question put by The Arabic Network for Human Rights information in its recent poll. 43% of the answers emphasized that we have to "disclose the conspiracy between Arab governments". While, 25% of responses declared that we have to be more humanitarian in handling the case and other 25% agreed that the problem stem from the missed information which make it difficult for any one to take a clear situation.
