More Restrictions on the Freedom of Press in Egypt:
Director of Al-Jazeera Cairo Office is prevented from travel

Cairo - 26 November 2006

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) condemns the prevention of Al-Jazeera Cairo office director, Hussein Abdul Ghani from travel to Al-Jazeera headquarter in Doha and held him for four hours on Friday 24 November. The reasons of prevention are, allegedly, that Abdul Ghani was accused of broadcasting false news in April, and that he was subject to interrogation on "mistaken injury" claim in 1997.

The Airport Security Forces in Egypt held Abdul Ghani for four hours and told him that the Public Prosecutor listed him as "prevented from travel" because he was accused of broadcasting false news in April and that he was detained for one week in May 1997!

"The conflicting statements of the security men at the airport, concerning the reasons of prevention, reveal clearly the arbitrariness practiced against him. Abdel Ghani was not previously notified by the Public Prosecutors resolution. In addition, there is no logical reason for prevention, excluding the desire to confuse and to retaliate upon Abdul Ghani," HRinfo Executive Director, Gamal Eid said.

It is noteworthy that the charge of "mistaken injury" against Abdul Ghani, which took place eight years ago, fell by law. Re-mentioning "the so-called" incident now indicates the failure of Airport Security Forces in updating their computers data.

Preventing an Egyptian journalist from travel because of a defunct "mistaken injury" case, while facilitating the travel of a Qatari national who caused the death of five citizens during "Airport Race" incident in September 2005, is considered a controversial paradox.

While condemning the prevention of Al-Jazeera Cairo office director from travel, HRinfo believes that this prevention is an episode in the series of permanent harassments against freedom of press in Egypt. This does not comply with the claims of the Egyptian government regarding the respect of the freedom of press.
