HRinfo's New Year Wish List:
Release Kareem Amer and Al-Azhar Students Remove Al-Azhar University President The Public Prosecutor to consider the law and his Conscience More Than Considering the Demands of Security Service Cairo - 3 January 2007 The New Year has begun and the Egyptian government is apparently not going to change its stance towards human rights standards. From the very beginning, the government arrested large numbers of citizens in a broad campaign in three cities suspected of belonging to Muslim Brotherhood group. Arresting dozens of citizens for this alleged cause is only an episode in the series of unlimited and unlawful human rights violations committed by Security Services. This only shows that ongoing statements about democracy and the recently announced constitutional amendments only aim to improve the government's image abroad and avoid the impact of the recent exposures made by Egyptian bloggers of torture in police stations. The New Year brings new hopes for a better government. The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information looks forward to a year different from the one before, which has witnessed the government's excel in violating the Law. The government violated the right to judiciary independence and the right to freedom of expression. It has committed torture and detained journalists. The rule of law was totally replaced by the rule of officials responsible for executing the law. We announce our wishes for the New Year, aware that they are achievable. The Egyptian government could do them simply by adhering to the rule of law and committing to bringing justice for Egypt. Our simple wishes aim at restoring a smile to the families of those who were falsely detained, and to ensure that the rights of each Egyptian citizen are respected without discrimination. HRinfo's Wish List:
2- To release the secular blogger Kareem Amer and respect the right to freedom of expression 3- To remove the president of Al-Azhar University who gave a negative example of Egyptian chancellors and highlighted a negative image of such respectable university. He acted like a police officer and incited security forces to detain the students whom he is responsible for their safety. In this respect, students who affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood and students with similar ideas of Kareem Amer are equally regarded. 4- The Public Prosecutor to reconsider his policies which are biased towards the demands of the security Services and lack neutrality. 5- To protect the life of the political opponent Ayman Nour and to release him even if for health reasons. 6- Al-Badiel newspaper to be issued as a new step towards canceling the illegitimate entity named The Supreme Council of the Press. |
