    The Case of Philip Rizk:
ANHRI Lawyer and Representative from German Embassy Witness Break-In at Family Home and Brutality of State Security Forces

    Cairo 9th February 2009

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information said today that security officers from Maadi in south Cairo broke into the house of human rights activist Phillip Rizk at dawn. Rizk was kidnapped by state security forces last Friday while taking part in a pro-Gaza demonstration. Police searched his house despite not having a search warrant and would have forced his father to go with them to his company to have that searched too had it not been for the presence of a delegate from the German embassy and a lawyer from ANHRI.

State security officers headed to Rizk's family house at 2 am today and demanded to search his home and his father’s company claiming that they would hand his son over immediately afterwards.

Despite having no warrant, they broke into the family's house and were about to drive the father to the company's premises under threat of force, when they were stopped by a lawyer from ANHRI and a delegate from the German embassy who were present. Phillip's father has a dual German-Egyptian nationality.

Gamal Eid, executive director of ANHRI, said these officers did not practice thuggery without knowledge of their chiefs. The ministry of interior should bring these officers to question and give an explanation for their officers' disrespect for the law especially as there are witnesses from the German embassy and ANHRI.

ANHRI says this incident has been included into the report submitted by lawyers to the prosecution and demands the attorney general publicize the interrogation results in the incident of kidnapping Philip Rizk especially as the state security officers have admitted that he is detained in the state security headquarters in Maadi.
