Egypt : Editor in Chief behind bars
Cairo,7\7\2009
ANHRI express deepest contempt about arresting Yaser Barakat editor in chief of Al –Mogaz newspaper.
The implementation terms unit put Yaser under arrest on 6/7/2009, 11 pm in front of the paper HQ, Darih Saad St., to execute the 6- month imprisonment sentence ruled on 23\6\2009 of the case #2453\2008 in addition to a LE20,000 fine.
The case was filed from Mustafa Bakry, editor in chief of "Al-Osbooa" weekly for Yaser having published an article tilted " Bakry..Syrian intelligence and Naguib Sawiris" in "Al-Mogaz" which Bakry considered to be an insult and libel.
ANHRI calls on reporters union to resolve reporter-reporter conflicts by activating the reporter honor charter. It is ridiculous to demand not to imprison reporters in publishing cases and yet receive such a blow from a reporter suing his colleague and imprisoning him.
ANHRI appeals to reporters union to intervene immediately so as to bridge the gap between colleagues, take all possible measures to release Yasser and settle the dispute in the union rather than law courts and gloomy dungeons.
