Mauritania: A Strong Return To The Arab Repression Shed
Hanafi Ould Dah Senteced For Two Years , Other Reporter Fined To $1.1M

    Cairo on February 7, 2010

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information announced today that Mauritania had launched strong return to the Arab shed of repression, where judiciary is politically driven and press freedom suffers state hostility.

Mauritanian authorities decided on a two year imprisonment of the renowned journalist Hanafi Ould Dah, editor of the e- paper “Takadomi” , on charges of " challenging good moral and incitement to insurgence ". Another journalist, Abdel-Fattah Ould Ebeidna " editor of AlAqsa paper was fined $ 1.1M convicted of libel of a Mauritanian business man.

Ould Dah has completed his six month on 24/12/2009, but the Mauritanian authorities refused to release him, as prosecutors appealed the sentence. The appeal court sentenced Ould Dah to two years in a trial marred by many doubts about the coup leaders pressuring judges for a harsh sentence.

The Court of Appeal of Nouakchott fined the journalist, Abdel-Fattah Ould Ebeidna, $1.1M for insult and libel of a business man though the journalist was granted a presidential pardon on the very case.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information said, "What happened in Mauritania is a carbon copy of what is happening in most Arab countries, where governments rally all forces to take revenge at journalists who dare to criticize the president. The only difference is that Ould Dah criticized the military coup leader before being president . The sentence is a typical military police measure against a journalist with just a pen in his hand" .
