Releasing four human rights activists in Saudi Arabia

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia issued a decree on 8th August 2005 to pardon five human rights activists among them three reformers demanding constitutional reforms in the kingdom. The reformers are Ali Al-Doumini, Abdullah Al-Hamed and Matrouk Al-Fateh who were sentenced on 15th may to nine, seven and six years in prison. They were convicted to urging on disobedience.
The appeal court had confirmed the sentences on 24th July 2005.
"The accusations against them were calling for a constitutional kingdom and using western concepts while asking for reform" the D.A said.
The king issued another pardon for the Saudi attorney Abdul-Rahman Al-Lahem who used to defend the reformers and was arrested after criticizing the judiciary procedures during the trial.
"The fifth person was the well-known Islamist Said Ben Zouir who had a five-year-sentence after being convicted to justify violent actions at the kingdom" the interion minister said.
It is to be mentioned that there are more than 4 thousand opinion prisoners in the Saudi Kingdom.
