Formation of the
Working group on press freedom and free expression in North Africa (WGFENA) On June 7 2006, the working group was established with the following objectives: 1 To set up a mechanism for horizontal solidarity among North Africa countries - Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania - with the aim of confronting violations which target press freedom and free expression in North Africa, and to act for the removal of the obstacles which hinder these freedoms. 2 To establish links with regional and international institutions and the networks, especially with NAFEO (Network of African Freedom of Expression Organisations) that are working to promote press freedom and free expression and thus to become an effective regional pressure group inclined to encourage freedom of opinion, press freedom and free expression. To achieve these objectives, the founding members have agreed to:
-sending letters of support to victims of repression -launching urgent actions -inciting the media to highlight attacks on free expression in our respective countries. The founding members have decided to open it doors to new members provided that they fulfil the conditions of being credible and active on the ground. New members application must be approved by the founding members. The organizers decided to create a secretariat in order to coordinate the work of the group formed of a coordinator and two deputy coordinators until the next meeting and who are: Sihem Bensedrine: coordinator; Gamal Eid and Aboubaker Jamai, deputy coordinators.
